The Lake County Board of Commissioners presented Kathy Strancar, Executive Director of Forbes House, and Office Manager Nancy Hilborn a resolution proclaiming October 2021 Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Lake County.
In 2020, Forbes House provided shelter for 276 adults and children. Advocates responded to more than 2,000 calls and 741 crisis calls from a hospital or a police department. There were 227 individuals who attended support groups, and court advocates assisted 306 survivors in court. Forbes House serves survivors from newborn to age 81.
Forbes House is the only shelter located in Lake County dedicated to providing confidential services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking in a safe and supportive environment. Services include shelter, a 24/7 help-line, court assistance, personal advocacy, peer support, domestic violence outreach and education, information and resources, safety planning, and referrals.
Domestic violence does not discriminate; it is vastly indiscriminate. The demographic is diverse because abuse impacts people of any race, age, sex, religion, ethnicity, socio-economic class, and geography. The practice at Forbes House is to provide services to any survivor of domestic violence or human trafficking who needs safety.
