Foreclosure
Non-payment of Real Estate taxes could result in a foreclosure action, tax lien sale or other legal action in order to collect taxes that are necessary to fund the county’ school, agencies and local governments.
- The Lake County Treasurer holds the first and best lien against real property in Lake County.
- The Delinquent Tax Division holds an annual sale to collect outstanding delinquent taxes. The tax lien purchaser may request foreclosure from the county Prosecuting Attorney’s office or may proceed with private counsel if the lien is not fully repaid or on payment plan with the purchaser within 18 months.
- For properties not owner -occupied with past due taxes, a political subdivision, such as the City of Painesville, may request an expedited foreclosure through a Land Bank Program .
- The Lake County Prosecutor may begin a foreclosure action , in the name of the Treasurer, for past due taxes. These may lead to sheriff sales. These records and lists are kept by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and published on their website. https://www.lakecountyohio.gov/sheriff/foreclosures/
